Exploring Londons Gyms 3: BePilates

Fashion

My third installment is here… the third of my recommendations of fun, amazing and lets not forget effective workouts in London. This time its BePilates. I have to say…. this may actually have been my favourite. I have never done a reformer Pilates class and had preconceptions of the class that made me nervous. I had only ever seen super flexible victoria’s secret models or women that have been doing yoga for years doing reformer classes posted on social media. I thought there was no way I would be able to do anything! That’s why before my class I made very clear I felt like my flexibility was that of a normal 22 year old girl and that although I love matt Pilates I had never done a reformer class so would it be possible to blend into the back of a class and take it easy!? I was told that I was misinformed and that you can start at any point, but they suggested I took a one on one class, so as a first timer I made sure I got the positions right and really got the most out of the class. I was excited!

Me on the reformer bed^^

So the first thing to say is that this is probably the nicest place I have ever worked out. The studio is so light, spacious, calming and open. So different to anywhere I’ve been in London. The skylights mean when you’re lying back on the reformer beds you are looking up into the (lucky me this time) sunny blue London sky. It’s a very inspiring and uplifting vibe.

So I was introduced to my instructor Marta, who I loved. I thought she was just the right amount of stern (in a motivational kinda way), fun and educational. Her background was yoga and she did an incredible job of demonstrating positions to look incredibly easy!

After Marta felt I’d got it we went to check out the Pilates Cadillac and the barrel. The barrel you sort of lie yourself over with your legs raised behind and try raising your arms to the side in an attempt to be an elegant swan. Not sure I mastered the elegance, but I definitely felt the burn in the backs of my legs. I have to say I was impressed at the variety of things we got done in just one hour.

The Cadillac is a strange looking bed, but this is not the part of the class where you get a little lie down. Marta showed me what I later described to my boyfriend as a backwards Michael Jackson move. You lean back using your abs to hold you upright, with the smallest help from a spring that you hold in your hands. The final piece of equipment we used was the Pilates chair. There really is so much you could do with these machines and I don’t want to bore you with the absolute ins and outs or ruin the fun of trying it out for yourself. I just want you to rest assured I managed everything and I didn’t feel completely useless, had the most amazing time as well as a good workout and was extremely achey the next day!

The Cadillac and the Barrel^^

If you’re a first timer or a reformer Pilates expert (be that self-proclaimed or for real) bePilates is definitely one to try. The beautiful studio is based in Marylebone on Chiltern Stress and does a variety of Pilates from group to individual sessions on the reformer, matt, MOTR and Bodhi suspension training classes. There’s bound to be something for you to try. The main thing to say is don’t be scared, its so much fun and you can definitely do it too!
