Shirt Dresses: The Summer Closet Classic

Fashion

We all have our closet classics – be that slogan t-shirts, the perfect pair of jeans or even a fitted leather jacket, but there’s one piece I think is underrated. The shirt dress.

With the rise in statement blouses and shirts we see that are bang on trend at the moment, I think shirt dresses can ease nicely into our Spring Summer wardrobes. Purposely oversized or slick and tailored – shirt dresses are a pretty perfect Summer look, and not to mention one of the easiest and most comfortable.

They’re not a recent trend by any means, think fashion icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, but I think we can make them a firm wardrobe essential and dress them up or down depending on the occasion.

So let me run you through 5 ways of wearing a shirt dress. Lets start though with this sort of boho, country chic look, which is based around my fatface shirt dress, fatface boots and Zara hat and bag - I want to call this country chic. But lets focus on a more general genre and try 'Boho'.

1. Boho

To create that boho look, check out a loose fitting shirt, leave a couple of the buttons un-done. If you want more of a silhouette add a little brown belt. But don’t forget cute suede ankle boots and a hat.

2. Minimal

Try a minimal look with a crisp white straight shirt, stiff collar and rolled up cuffs. Slick your hair back for a model look and add some shiny loafers.

3. Romantic

Not into the sharp look? Try a more floaty dress style and play with textures and silky shirts. Try more frilly shirt dresses, with cute collars and loose wavy hair.

4. Tom Boy

This is another one of my favourites because although the vibe is tom boy, I find it can look so cute! Try a more square shirt, almost like you’ve borrowed your dads, some cute ankle socks and trainers to complete the look. I’d even pop on a little back pack and make it sort of school girl like at the same time.

5. Festival

With festival season coming up, a really easy look is an embellished shirt dress. Leave the buttons un- done with a statement bikini or bralet underneath. Et voila – the easiest festival look ever. You can even pair it with wellies! Win win.

My look:

Shirt Fatface

Boots Fatface

Bag Zara

Hat Zara
